Mayflower Coloring Pages are a great way to open the discussion about the ship that the Pilgrims sailed on to this country in 1620. 102 passengers and 30 crew sailed the immense voyage from England to America. They came to the new world in search for religious freedom. It took 66 days to make the journey. That’s over 2 months! They left from a port in England called Plymouth on September 2nd. They arrived in America on November 11th, 1620. Many don’t know that the Mayflower journey was meant leave in August, on TWO ships. The ship called the Speedwell started to leak right away. They had to go back to port and the passengers squeezed onto the Mayflower, leaving the Speedwell behind. This got them off to a late start in September and wasn’t ideal. It was the height of storm season. The length of the voyage would put them at risk as well because of the weather, but the Pilgrims were dedicated. It was a hard trip and was getting cold. 45 of the passengers died from conditions like scurvy, the cold and the dangers of sailing. One man was flung overboard and drown in a storm. But life did flourish. A baby boy was born on the ship during the journey. Historians estimate that approximately 20 million people today are descendants of these brave Mayflower passengers.
