Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man of 1960s history. Part of the civil rights movement, the minister was known for his elegant and emotionally moving sermons and speeches. Most widely known was his “I have a dream” speech on August 28, 1963. At the massive March on Washington, more than 200,000 Americans of all colors rallied at the Washington Monument for Jobs and Freedom. The goal was equal rights for ALL men.
We all know the “I have a dream” speech, but did you know that this part of the speech was not intended for the rally?
Martin Luther King made it a good way through his planned speech, when Mahalia Jackson, a famous gospel singer who performed at the event, shouted “Tell them about the dream, Martin, tell them about the dream”. At that point, Dr. King moved his notes aside, paused to look out at the crowd, and went on to deliver the historic speech that moved people to tears.
His wisdom didn’t stop at this famous speech. Here are a few beautiful Martin Luther King Quotes
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
